The islands are separated by an international border, which is also part of the International Date Line, about 2 km from each island. At their closest points, the two islands are about 3.8 km apart.

Due to the international Date Line the Big Diomede is almost a day ahead of Little Diomede, but not completely; due to locally defined time zones, Big Diomede is only 21 hours ahead of Little Diomede.
Because of this the islands are sometimes called Tomorrow Island (Big Diomede) and Yesterday Isle (Little Diomede). So looking at Big Diomede from Little Diomede - one can see 'tomorrow' and looking at Little Diomede from Big Diomede - one can see 'Yesterday'as the time difference between the two islands is nearly 21 hrs.

During winter, an ice bridge usually spans the distance between these two islands; therefore during such times it is theoretically possible (although not legal, since travel between the two islands is forbidden) to walk between the United States and Russia.

Image courtesy of Cpg100/Wikimedia Commons The moral of the story to many is that NASA was a wasteful government organization that would be giving your hard-earned tax dollars to some greedy contractors charging sky-high prices for seemingly trivial objects whereas the enemy the Soviets were common sense and practical but the story is a myth however like all goodness it's based on facts facts w
